I know I have blogged once before about my friend and her chickens, but these two that came into my studio were really something else. These rare black chickens are called Ayam Cemani chickens, and while they are totally black on the outside, apparently they are totally black inside too! (I didn’t check this personally though!) Read on to find out more about that time those rare chickens visited my Calgary Pet Photography studio!
These amazing black chickens belong to my friend Cassandra. Unlike her other chickens, Tyrone and LaToya don’t live in Cassandra’s back yard coop. They live in a large coop somewhere out of town. We anticipate that this breeding pair, because they have not been handled much, might be a challenge to photograph. I was more concerned about the rooster, having never worked with one before, however after a couple minutes, he settled right in!
It was actually the hen, LaToya, who gave us more of a challenge! She really enjoyed perching at the top of my backdrop stand, and she did not want to come down! After flapping around my studio for about 30 minutes, I can tell you I sure had a cleanup job afterwards! I was finding black feathers in my studio for a week!
I always love when I have the opportunity to photograph something new and different. While I do Calgary Pet Photography, I’m actually in High River, and it’s a small town. While I shoot a lot of family and small business images, but being in a small town, it’s hard to specialize – you have to learn how to handle any photography situation. Chickens have been a new and fun way for me to learn – it’s definitely outside of the normal assignments! These dark chickens really allowed me to experiment with low-light. It was a fantastic time! If you’ve got an exotic pet, I want it in my studio!
