In August 2015 my husband and I made the decision to apply to adopt through the Alberta Government. Though blessed with one biological daughter, we have been unable to have another. After a lot of contemplating, we realized that growing our family through adoption was the best decision for our family.
Adoption is a very long and difficult process. After the initial application, we have to wait for intake. It wasn’t until January 2016 there was space for us in the mandatory classes. Once completing those, it was a long an arduous home study – where a psychologist comes in, interviews your family, inspects your home and ensures that your family really is ready for adoption. Many children who pass through the government system have been traumatized, and it can be difficult to integrate these children into your family.
Undeterred, we forged forward, and finally were approved in October 2016. I took these images a couple weeks later, in order to be able to make a public announcement that our family had been approved! What happens next? It’s very hard to say. Mostly, just waiting. Waiting for the right child to be matched with our family.
But in the mean time, we can enjoy these children’s portraits of my almost 6-year-old daughter, who is anxiously awaiting a brother or sister!
